Check character by character
Do not glance at the two numbers and assume. Read them one character at a time, left to right, and compare. The most frequent mismatch is a single digit, often at the end, and it is genuinely easy to miss on a folded note.
Also compare the prefix letter and the suffix letter or star. A mismatch in either of those counts and is worth just as much.
